Abstract

Special emphasis has been laid in Islam on acquiring religious education and dissemination of knowledge of religious sciences. Acquiring of knowledge has been given the status of an obligation in Islam. This paper identifies and examins two overlapping concerns on religious sciences, i.e. the difference between mandatory and optional religious education. First, it reviews the religious perspective of madatory discourses of the ‘ulama’ in acquiring religious education. Second, it examins the debates on this subject and sheds light on intellectual exchanges between religious scholars of the different schools of thought.
